Close reading seems to be one of the bigger pushes with Common Core standards. But – are you like me? Did you read it as cloze reading? In all seriousness, I was confused by all the hoopla about it because I thought it was what I did as a student – had two identical passages (one of which was missing the words) and then students simply filled in the correct word. How in the world was that higher-level thinking? <– That’s what I kept thinking to myself!
But – lo and behold – it’s not cloze reading, it’s close reading! (As in, keep the locket close to your heart!) Now, that – added in with all of the readings I did after figuring that out – makes perfect sense!
This was also a recent discussion at one of our in-services in school. I want to share the document my group presented to hopefully help you understand close reading as well.
