I’m sure you’ve said it before. It’s an innocent phrase. “I’m just a teacher.”
You are more than just a teacher!
When you become a teacher, you become so much more! Here are just a few of the many things that teachers do and are every single day!
You are a counselor. How many times have you had to help dry a student’s tears or listen to the painstaking story of what happened at home last night?
You are a listener. Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on at some point. You listen without passing judgment.
You are a nurse. That skinned knee or bloody nose? You’ve got this!
You are an encourager. Every day you encourage your students to do their very best and be the very best version of themselves. You may be the only one they ever hear encouragement from. Do not stop.
You are a referee. You `break up squabbles in the classroom on a regular basis.
You are kind. Students know you are. You show them this every single day.
You are a role model. Students look up to you. They will remember your words and actions for years to come.
You are a guide. You help students find the answer when they think it is impossible.
You are caring. What other profession do you know where they spend an average of $500 a year on supplies that should be readily available. You care. Yes, you obviously do.
You are an enforcer. You know students need to be held to high, yet realistic expectations. You enforce the rules so they understand that actions have consequences.
You are flexible. When is the last time you had an entire week where your classroom schedule was not changed due to the weather, some assembly taking place at the school, or even a phone call interrupting your lesson. Your flexibility allows you to roll with it and still do a great job teaching.
You are understanding. You know why that one student was unable to get their homework done last night. You figure out a way to make it work so they understand the information without punishing them for things in their home life that are out of their control.
You persevere. You are put in front of a class of more students than the average adult could handle, many with special needs or behavioral challenges that most people only dream of. Yet you find a way to get them all on task and learning.
You are positive. The world of education can throw many things your way to be negative about, yet you keep a positive attitude. It’s all about the kids and you show that by keeping a great attitude both in the school and out.
You inspire. Someone you find it in yourself every day to inspire your students (and possibly even your colleagues) to do great things.
YOU ARE A TEACHER!
You are not just a teacher. You make a difference every single day. Be proud of that!
