“Mom, mom, mom!”
“Yes, honey?”
“Guess what my teacher did today!”
The excitement in this child’s voice was undeniable! I didn’t catch the rest of the conversation as my husband and I walked down the street of New York City during our honeymoon. However, this was one of just several conversations about teachers I overheard on our trip.
After teaching in public schools for eight years, I understand the impact teachers have on students. We have a lot of power! We can make a student’s day with the smallest of gestures. I’m sure there are many conversations like the one I overhead that happen each night when parents pick their children up from work or spend some time in the evening with them.
Hearing students and their families discuss their teachers in such a positive light simply filled my heart with joy. We know all too well that the talk surrounding education lately is largely negative, particularly on a national level and in some states worse than others. However, these positive conversations are happening every.single.day!
If I overhead a half dozen conversations simply while waiting for a cab or subway, how many chats take place each day? We truly have #HappyClassrooms all throughout the United States!
I am writing this today to say THANK YOU TEACHERS! And to not give up! We do have a powerful, positive impact as teachers. I know it’s hard to see it each day when we’re working, but it’s there!
So – again – thank you teachers for all that you do for your students and school each day. Please enjoy the holiday season, spend some time with your own family and friends, and know that all across this great nation (and the world) a student is saying, “Guess what my teacher did,” to their family and loved ones this holiday season. =) You are loved and appreciated!
Please share your stories in the comments below. I’d love to hear some more heart-warming tales this holiday season! And remember to continue using the #HappyClassrooms on social media!
