Do you have that one family member? You know, the crazy one, that everybody loves anyway? Yea – me too! 🙂
Back in 1996, Grandpa Jack wrote all of his children and grandkids a book. It was stories about his life. Earlier this year, I took that book into my fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classroom. The kids absolutely LOVED them! I decided that I had to get them reading more of these stories. I also knew we needed to work on Close Reading more. Then the idea of turning Grandpa Jack’s stories into classroom activities was truly born!
My kiddos fell in love! I ended up taking five of Grandpa Jack’s stories and turning them into a full week’s worth of lesson plans. I have never seen the students so excited to come to class!
One of the kids loved the stories so much that he actually wrote a comic for it (without being told or asked)! Click on either of the pictures below if you want to see the pdf (or share it with your students).
After using these in my classroom, my grandpa gave me permission to share these with the rest of the TpT world. You can grab the first story for FREE by clicking here or on the picture below. {These were perfect for my 4th, 5th, and 6th graders – but you may find the levels vary a little. The Lexile levels range from 750-880.}
If your students fall in love with the first story the way mine did, I hope you’ll consider purchasing the full product here.
What other activities do you think your students could come up with after reading these stories? I’d love for you to share more ideas in the comments!
