This close reading “One Time, Old Time” download is great for 4th, 5th, or 6th grade students.
I designed this when teaching fourth, fifth, and sixth grade reading to maintain my student’s attention and to give the more exposure to close reading. My students love listening to the “voice” of my cowboy grandpa in the many stories he wrote.

Each close reading passage comes with three sets of directions and questions. The first read requires students to answer who, what, where, and when questions. The second read asks students to answer why and how questions. On the third read, the students are asked to respond to a reading response prompt that requires higher-level thinking.
