In honor of Veterans’ Day coming up on Monday, a coworker and I teamed up to complete a dual Social Studies/Writing project. Each year our school does something special to celebrate Veterans’ Day, and this year we decided to focus on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
We started by asking the students to research about the Tomb. (Hello, Common Core skills!) Then we gave them a graphic organizer, and finally they wrote their drafts on the paper provided below.
We were both able to get a grade out of this assignment, and it was really fun watching the students learn so much about the topic! They were super excited and were continuously running up to tell me new facts.
Now – I realize that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier may not be the exact topic you had in mind. So – I also created similar sheets for Veterans’ Day, Memorial Day, thanking veterans, thanking active military, and thanking military families.
These would even work to include in gift boxes you are sending to military families. I can’t think of a better service project for our students!
If there’s another format you’d like to see me add, just ask in the comments below. I’m not promising I’ll get to every one, but I’ll do what I can. 🙂

To anyone who has ever served in the military – THANK YOU! And to your families – an extra special thank you for allowing us to share your loved one!

Thank you for these. I spend some time talking about the tomb of the unknown soldier with my students for Remembrance Day. I will be able to add this to my resources for next year. We do our assembly tomorrow so I won't be able to do the writing this time.
