Book Sales!

Our 5th grade classes held book sales last week. No, not the kind requiring any money! The kind where the students try to “sell” their classmates on a book they’ve read! These work great to get students more excited about reading books, and they also work great for covering those pesky listening and speaking standards. {I’d also love to mention that they’re highly entertaining! Check out the pictures below for more inspirational costume ideas.}

It all started when I was volunteered to do a book sale for each of the 5th grade classrooms. I had a lot of fun with it! For my book sale, I “sold” the book The Fabled Fourth Graders of Aesop Elementary by Candace Fleming.

Each of the students was supposed to dress up to reflect the book from their book sale. Of course that meant I also had to dress up! Man – did the kids ever look at me likes I was nuts when I walked into the room!! But it got their attention, and they really listened! {I don’t think the library had this book on hand again for the rest of the year. It was CONSTANTLY checked out by a 5th grader!}

If you're looking for a way to increase student engagement, get your kids reading more, AND help your kids have fun - you're going to love doing BOOK SALES. These work great in the upper elementary classroom, but I could see them easily being adapted for middle or high school as well. Click through to learn how you could use these in your school, and make sure to grab your FREE download. {2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grade, Year 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8} #HoJoTeaches #Reading #Books

Yes, I really wore that! No, I did not wear it all day! 😉

Gotta love book sales!

About a week after my “preview” book sale, the students had to perform their own. We weren’t quite sure what to expect…Using book sales in the elementary classroom! Read on to find out how this can be done, and download the FREE rubric to grade your students!

We were pleasantly surprised! The first student – who is normally pretty shy and reserved – came out wearing this –>

Yep – those are underpants!! We couldn’t believe he had dressed like Captain Underpants! Not only that, but he was totally prepared! He even hid behind his “machine” and made a bunch of funky – uh, cool – sounds!

Here’s the link to the free rubric we used to grade students on their book sales.

We did book sales three times during the year to help students get their listening and speaking skills in. These would be great posts to show directly to your students so they could get ideas of what they are expected to do!

    I’d love to know more about what you had the students include in their actual presentation? Did they do a formal book report prior, did you provide them with an outline for their presentation, require specific items to be included, etc? I think that my students would love this idea! Thank you!

      Check out the rubric. That is the only thing we provided for the students. There was no formal book report prior. I did do a “presentation” so they had a better idea, but I did it solely based on the rubric. Good luck!
