We have been very busy writing this year! (I have often slacked off in this department, but not this year!) Before starting our first descriptive writing unit, we did this little monster activity.
I drew a “monster” – no judging! – on the Promethean board. I then started to write the details with the students’ help. The students were told to be descriptive enough that a classmate could draw their copy, but I didn’t get into a big lecture on it.

The next day we switched papers. Their partner had to draw their monster using only the directions given and without looking at it!
It was interesting to see some of the pairs!

We then discussed whether or not details are important. The project worked out perfectly because the students were able to articulate what they could have done better! It was an awesome springboard into the true descriptive writing assignment we started on the next day. 🙂

Another activity we did for the first time was task cards! This particular set is one I created a few years ago for my 3rd graders. Now I’ve successfully used it with 3rd, 5th, and 6th graders!
The kiddos loved playing Scoot! They said it was “easy” and “fun” because they only had to think about one problem at a time.

Did I mention multiple meaning words align with Common Core Language standard 4? That’s right! Multiple meaning words align with grades 2-8! (Obviously the reading level of your students will determine whether or not these cards are a good fit for your classroom.)

Ohhhhhhhhh! I love the monster idea! I think I should try it and see if it helps my fifth graders truly write out the details in their writing!!! Thank you for sharing.. 🙂
