As you can see in the image above, each puzzle comes with two options. The first is the puzzle in its full shape and the second is the puzzle “pre-cut” – which is the “print and go” option. YOU will need to type out the types of questions you want to include.
Types of questions and answers you could use these puzzles for –
- any math concept that fits on the puzzles (story problems probably won’t work, but basic math facts are great!)
- grammar concepts – such as a contraction to the two words that create it, a singular verb to its irregular plural verb match, a compound word to the two words that create it, etc.
- foreign language practice – include the English word where students match the words they are learning from French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, or others
- any other topic you can think of that fits on the puzzle!
These puzzles are great for –
- centers, stations, or rotations
- test prep
- Review
- Early or fast finishers
- Enrichment
- GATE (gifted and talented education)
- Worksheet alternatives
- Critical thinking skills
- Student, partner, or small group collaboration

A few tips –
- Save the file right away. This way you can keep an original copy and also have the current one.
- I use the find and replace option when updating the puzzles. You can manually type them all in, but it takes quite a bit longer.
- When doing find/replace, start with #10a first, work up until the puzzle is done, THEN go back to numbers 1-9. This way you don’t have 1 trying to replace in the wrong spots.
- If you want to give students a starting point, I recommend adding a * in the upper left-hand corner. Either tell them this is their starting point OR put the * in the same spot on the puzzle mat.
- You can use the prep sheet to copy over problems from textbooks, plan out your own problems, or simply wing it – but I personally like to prep to ensure I don’t repeat anything.
Here is a video walking you through my tips and tricks for using these puzzles –

There are also puzzle mats for most of the puzzles. If the shape you are using doesn’t have one, you can make your own by simply deleting the text boxes on whichever puzzle you are using. These are a great way to differentiate for the students who need a puzzle mat for support.

Denise says
Hello! I am trying to do the poop puzzle but am a bit confused. The text area on the poop puzzle isn’t large enough to type in a question. Any advice? Do you have a completed poop puzzle to share? thanks! Denise
HoJo says
Generally full questions won’t fit. Rather I do something simple like cannot=can’t or 2+2=4. That way there is enough room. I do not have a completed poop puzzle, but you can see all the other shape puzzles I have completed here – https://hojosteachingadventures.com/product/ultimate-math-fact-fluency-games/ Thank you for your comment! ~Heather from HoJo’s Teaching Adventures, LLC
