Either way, this is a fun little activity and I wanted to share it with everyone. It’s called the “Couch Potato Reading Contest”. Basically it is the exact opposite of being a couch potato! The goal is to get students to give up screen time, such as TVs, computers, and video games.
This is an activity my co-teacher did with the 5thgraders this year. However, I think it could easily be adapted for multiple grade levels! Simple ask kids to not watch TV or to at least cut back on their screen time and read more. Students track how many minutes they read, have an adult sign off on the sheet (see below), and return it to school the next day. Turn it into a classroom challenge to see who can read the most minutes or just meet a goal as a class!
When the week is up, give out the participation and winning certificates (end of document) to your students!
In this FREE download, you will also get some ideas for other ways to use this activity in writing, math, and art!
Is this something you could see yourself using with your students?
