Summertime Learning FUN! {Upper Elementary}

Last year I taught summer school, and boy – we had a blast! There are so many fun games and activities we can do to help learning be totally awesome. This is especially true when kids are unmotivated to be in school and we have no choice but to keep them 100% engaged!

This blog is geared more toward upper elementary, but you can see my lower elementary ideas here.

First up – dodgeball math!

These fuzzy dice were the perfect way to get the students working on their basic math skills. Sometimes we added, other times we multiplied, but we always had fun! {Just make sure you say no head shots! I was the only one who took a shot to the eye, but that die really hurt! lol}

Next up – Scrabble Apple!

This was a very engaging game that kept the kiddos doing basic math and spelling words. It also helped with vocabulary skills. Win, win, WIN!

Next up – a similar game, Bananagrams!

Some days the kids just wanted to focus on words and not so much on the math – so we did a lot of Banagrams. Ten to fifteen minutes of hands-on learning, and everyone was happy!

Finally, you know we did a bunch of Magic Square Puzzles!

You can find all of those pictured above and more at my store!

Then of course we did plenty of basic writing. But I really wish we had these “Caption This” writing prompts back then. They would have kept the kids so engaged!!!

This is what the older kiddos and I worked on during summer school. Here’s a post about the activities I did with the K-2 crowd.

Happy Summer!!
