Here’s a fairly short and sweet post. I’ve struggled this year to come up with meaningful word work activities for my students. But here are two that were a hit!

During the synonym search students sat in their desks and each wrote one word down on a whiteboard. They then rotated the whiteboards around and wrote another word on the boards. As you can see, not every word was a good choice for a synonym – but that’s ok! It meant we had more to discuss. 🙂
The next day we made the switch over to antonyms. Students worked in groups of two. In three minutes, they had to write as many antonym pairs on the board as they could. The catch? They had to write one word and their partner wrote the antonym. BUT – they could not talk! There were some interesting gestures during this one!

Cute ideas! As a fifth grade ELA teacher, I also struggle for Word Work activities from time to time, so this is perfect to add to my list of options! Thanks!
