Grammar Game for Plurals and Possessive Nouns

My 6th graders are still struggling with basic parts of speech. For example, I can give them this sentence: My mom went to the grocery store to get a loaf of bread. I have kids that will not even be able to pick out the nouns, let alone the other parts of speech. It’s frustrating, but we keep plugging along and games seem to be helping!

PLURALS AND POSSESSIVE NOUNS

Looking for engaging grammar games you can use right now? Check them out here!ย

This was one of those spur of the moment games that I just came up with as we started grammar one day.

I started by writing singular noun, plural noun, singular possessive, and plural possessive on the board.

I then gave each student a marker. We had three different colors. So there were three teams – black, red, and green.

The students then had two minutes to write as many words as they could. They could only writeย one word in a column at a time. (Otherwise I was afraid they would sit there and just create a long list of words on one!)

At the end of the time frame, we went through each list. We decided as a class if they met the criteria. We also went through and got rid of the duplicates.
Since we had color coordinated our markers, we counted up how many words each group had.
While this is not the most original game in the world, it worked. I’ve honestly seen an increase in awareness of nouns. Now to change it up a bit to watch their awareness of adjectives, pronouns, verbs, and other parts of speech improve as well!

I'm a 6th grade teacher too, and this was our focus last week. I'm going to use this game as a review this week. Great idea! ๐Ÿ™‚
