Close Reading FREEBIE – One Time Old Time Story {Grades 4-6}
This Close Reading freebie was designed for two reasons– to maintain my student’s attention and to give them more exposure to close reading. My students love reading and listening to stories about my grandpa, and I thought your students would enjoy it as well. It truly has a unique “voice” to it! Stories from previous generations have always been a treasure to me, so I want to pass that on to my students – especially those who may not have elders in the picture!
This freebie has one reading passage, aligned to Common Core Informational Text standards.
Close reading passage are meant to help students gain a deeper understanding of the texts they read. The students will read each one-page story up to three times, although you can ask them to read it more or less depending on your needs.
This Close Reading passage comes with three sets of directions and questions. The first read requires students to answer who, what, where, and when questions. The second read asks students to answer why and how questions. On the third read, the students are asked to respond to a reading response prompt that requires higher-level thinking.
An answer key has been provided as a reference only. However, you may find that your students answers differ slightly, and that is perfectly acceptable!
Finally, there are two pages for note-taking at the end of this product. These can be used if your students struggle with marking the text or if you want to use the stories for multiple classes.
